Summary:
For this project, my teammates and I were matched with a local organization in need of help with some facet of their organization that related to the field of professional writing. Our team was matched with a small local nonprofit called Tikkun Farm. The farm is dedicated to “restoring people, community, and creation.” They do this through a combination of community outreach/support, job training for at-risk youth, and environmental restoration. This particular organization needed help with finding grants for specific purposes, their online presence (particularly their “Job Training” page), and a template for their annual impact report. Since I have a rather extensive background in UX, I lead the charge when it came to the farm’s online presence. In doing so, I conducted usability testing, created a series of recommendations for improvements based on the testing, and designed mockups of what those recommendations might look like.
Reflection:
Working through this project what challenging. Though, mostly due to the fat that the organization was going through a dramatic shift in leadership and an accelerated period of growth. I used methods of user testing that I had developed in my User Experience Research course and applied the skills of analysis I developed there as well as during my internships at Miami University and KCW Today, as well as my time at H&R Block. I created a list of recommendations that will help the site improve their reach, especially in terms of accessibility and readability. I also used software like Figma to help create mockups of some of the suggestions we made.
